Top 10 Substitution Tips

Low Phosphorus Choices

People with chronic kidney disease on dialysis need to stick to a special diet because their kidneys no longer work well.  That means their dietary needs are different from those of healthy people.  These individuals need to be careful about how much phosphorous they eat.  This can be hard.  Phosphorous is found in many foods.  Below are some favorite alternatives.

High-Phosphorus Foods

Low-Phosphorus Alternatives*

Bran cereals or oatmeal

Cream of wheat

Whole wheat bread

Italian, French or Sourdough bread

Peanut butter

Jam or jelly

Brussels sprouts

Green beans

Frozen or processed meats

Fresh chicken, fish or pork

Coca Cola® or Pepsi®

Sprite®, 7-Up® or Ginger Ale

Cow's milk

Unfortified rice milk, such as Rice DreamTM

Chocolate cake

White cake or angel food cake

Chocolate chip cookies

Sugar cookies or graham crackers

Ice cream

Sorbet

*Talk to your renal dietitian before making any changes to your diet.  Also, be mindful of portion sizes.  Some low-phosphorus foods may be considered high-phosphorus in large amounts.
